Towards a greener campus and sustainable education
Green course and sustainable education
Sustainable education, Yes or No?
Are you satisfied with the education at WUR? Do we need to take quick action to move education towards more sustainable? How should WUR vision on sustainability in the area of education look like?
To maintain WUR’s leading position in sustainability, education should play a crucial role. Therefore, S&I is actively seeking those answers by facilitating meetings between students and teachers. We believe the collaboration between teachers and students is a key driving force in co-creating a new educational picture at WUR. The main question we aim to explore together is whether WUR’s education is embedded in pathways and fundamentals which enable a sustainability transition, and if not, then which road do we need to walk to get out of current paradigms? With this project we aim to look further than small changes towards sustainable education, discussion about the fundamentals of the system is necessary for the transformation of education at WUR.
We would like to learn from your perspectives and discuss how we can help each other to not only envision what the future of education should look like, but also what we need to be able to actually put this into practice. If you are interested in joining the discussion with our teachers and students!
SeSu Week
Do you know plastic bags and cotton bags, which is more sustainable?
In the Seriously Sustainable Week, we collaborated with Green Office to provide a sustainable talk before the sustainable campus tour. Which we got the feedbacks like "very impressive","fresh my mind" from the participants.
After the SeSu Week, we also bring this projects to the new coming students. We gave them another sustainable tour based on our Chair Fernando's sustainable knowledge collections. We hope this can be another traditional topic in S&I.
Billie Cup, Reuse Revolution, S&I Lunchbox
Bring your own cup and lunch box
Want to get a discount for your coffee/tea on campus? Bring your own cups! S&I is keen on reducing the use of disposables in the campus. Together with Green Office and Wageningen Environmental Platform (WEP), S&I is working on the Keep-Cup project which encourages more use of reusables in students' daily life. Do you know you can bring a lunchbox to get your lunch? S&I is also actively promoting Bring your lunchbox campaign. We believe that a small change in daily life will lead to a big impact.
Reducing plastic waste
More sustainable readers
After noticing how many readers had a plastic binder, we came up with the idea to replace most of the plastic binders with the paperback readers. Most of the readers in the campus store are now paperbacks and they use as less plastic as possible. If you still see any readers with plastic, then please let us know so we can ask why it is not changed yet.
Regreening - GAN
It's time to join our Regreening event!
GAN, or Green Active Network Wageningen unites all the green organizations in Wageningen. The mission is to reinforce the green movement and to build a bigger and stronger green community in Wageningen. Many different organizations with many different approaches, identities and people form GAN. S&I is a key factor in promoting sustainable policy by interacting between the decision making at WUR and the students who stand for the green value. S&I is actively participating in activities and decision making in GAN since we value the network of green organizations.

Reducing paper waste
To minimize the waste of printed paper, S&I advocates to reduce the flyering times and deliver less amount of printed newsletters in the campus. Since we came up with this initiative from the previous years, S&I largely decreased the flyering moments from once per period to 2 times per year. In the meantime, we are trying our best to digitizing all the promotion activities.
S&I is keeping active on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Linkin, Youtube and WhatsApp to make sure most of the people can build up a connection with us and get to know the newest updates in the Student Council. In this way, we believe that we also provided transparency to all the students.
Haven't you followed us yet? Do it now!Battery collection point
Do you have any idea where to throw away your empty batteries? S&I came up with this sustainably initiative of the battery collection point. The collection box is set up next to the elevator in the forum. Throw battery around randomly or mix it with general garbage will lead to severe damage to the environment. It is essential for all the students to build up a common sense to throw the empty battery into the special collection box.
Protect the environment, start from small things around us!
